Year after year, guests return to Wilderness Retreat and Development Center to recapture the joy and tranquility of this place.
Great care is taken to introduce the comforts and conveniences necessary for all ages, while retaining the natural beauty of this setting.
As we look forward--mapping the future of Wilderness Retreat and Development Center--there are many more attainable goals. While some are more immediate needs than others, we recognize that there may be individuals who would like to support a specific project close to their heart.
Immediate projects for Mapping Our Future include:
- Rainbow Lodge Lift
- Tree House Village
- Program Vehicle
- New Dining Hall
Longer-range goals include:
- New Staff Cabin
- Nature Center
- Meditation Trail
- Team-building Area
- Lake Improvements
- Annual Funds
Priority Projects for Mapping Our Future
Lift for Rainbow Lodge
Rainbow Lodge has a bunkhouse sleep setting with a large great room and fireplace on the upper level, but the center's dining hall and kitchen are in the lower level. Some guests - especially older adults and individuals with mobility issues - find it difficult, if not impossible, to navigate the stairs. While plans exist for a new dining hall, both levels of Rainbow Lodge will always be used by guests. Therefore, we need a way to get people from one level to another more easily. In order to show greater consideration and to make the lodge more accessible to everyone, the addition of a lift in Rainbow Lodge is clearly an immediate need.
Tree House Village
This new above-the-ground camping experience will provide a more rustic setting for adventurous campers. Placed in and around existing trees, up to 12 new platform cabins will also increase the capacity of guests at the camp and provide an exciting new Wilderness experience.
Program Vehicle
Staff members continually visit area groups and churches to increase the center's visibility. As a result, the camp benefits from higher year-round usage, which makes it more affordable. A reliable vehicle that meets this need, and is sufficient for other daily tasks, is essential to the facility's future.
"This camp has impacted my faith journey through worship, music and learning through the encouragement of the counselors."
